Something New........

 Every year I make it a habit to have new photos or try new a technique.

This year I've been doing some high key photography and food photography.

I really like experimenting and creating something new. It's even more exciting when it works!

But what happens is my photography collection starts getting more eclectic. I don't know if that's good thing or not. I often hear that we should have a niche. Something we photograph well. For me I think right now I could create a well rounded body of work around my flowers. So I guess if I have to have a niche then it would be Flower Photography.

So now I have a niche I can experiment and expand on all the other types of photography I enjoy doing.

For today it's all about feathers. Over the past year when I take the dogs for a walk I'm also on the look out for feathers. As far as identifying these feathers I really couldn't tell you, but I do know the photo above are Blue Jay Feathers. I also have feathers from Mourning Doves and the rest I have no clue. I really love the way these feathers worked out. Very simple and minimalist.

Flower Power Friday.....Featuring Lilacs

 This week I'm featuring the beautiful Lilac!

There is nothing sweeter than the fresh scent of Lilacs in the Spring! 

 

 Springtime Lilacs Syringa vulgaris

Growing Lilacs.......

 

 ~The most common variety of Lilac Syringa vulgaris bloom in northern climates for about 2 weeks in late May, but there are early, mid and late season bloomers.  When planted together you could get up to 6 weeks of blooms.

~Lilacs are a hardy flowering shrub that is easy to grow and require little maintenance.

~They grow 5 to 15 feet tall and do well in full to part sun

~As you may know they are wonderfully fragrant and make wonderful cut flowers.

~Butterflies and bees love the Lilac.

~Lilacs come in a variety of colors from the traditional purple to white, pink, yellow and red.

~Prune the dead flower right after blooming to unsure more blooms for the next year. 

~Powdery mildew may be a problem during the hot and humid summer.  May be unsightly, but will not harm the plant.

Interesting Facts........

 

~Lilacs became the official state flower of New Hampshire in 1919.

~It was chosen to be the state flower because it symbolizes the hardy character of the men and women in the Granite State.

~Lilacs can live over 100 years

~There are over 1000 varieties of Lilacs.

~The Lilacs are originally from Europe and Asia.

~They date back to the 1750's in America.

~New York recognizes the Lilac as the official state bush.
